The Kuali Research system went live on January 21, 2020. Visit the Kuali Research (KR) website for current system information and support.

UC San Diego consistently ranks as one of the top universities in the world, and with $1 billion a year in research funding (and proposals of over $4 billion), it often finds itself on the leader board for top research institutions. Research Administration Systems is the area of the Enterprise Systems Renewal program (ESR) focused on sponsored research systems and business processes that support this impressive enterprise.

After an extensive vetting process with the help of sponsored research representatives from across the campus, Kuali Research was selected as the product UC San Diego uses to support its $1 billion a year sponsored research efforts.

Kuali Research offers these sponsored programs modules:

Pre-Award

  • Proposal Development
  • Institutional Proposal
  • Negotiations *New*

Post-Award

  • Awards
  • Subawards *New*

Note: The modules above were included in Kuali Research project. See Kuali Institutional Review Board (Kuali IRB) and Kuali Conflict of Interest (Kuali COI) projects for more on those modules.

Guiding Principles

We strive to develop processes that support a new culture and business models for the next generation of UC San Diego research administrators. Through process improvements, we are laying down the groundwork for years to come.

  • Be open to change: recognize that change may be necessary to improve processes.
  • Continue process improvement: change is a process where employees will acquire new skills, knowledge, and abilities through a transition phase to arrive at a desired new way of operating.
  • Support a new culture of quality: understand and thoughtfully design new processes which build a foundation for new capabilities and long-term impacts that may not be immediately visible.
  • Encourage feedback and critique: conduct 'demand-driven' process improvement by listening to affected experts.
  • Follow industry best practices: recognize the expertise of the selected industry experts and only deviate after review from Lean Six Sigma team and Governance.
