Training Strategy

We are working to finalize details on the training strategy in preparation of the January 21, 2020 project go-live date

We are implementing a blended learning approach to training. Bookmark this page to find details, registration links, and opportunities for training activities as they are scheduled!

What is a blended learning approach?

A blended learning approach combines multiple training methods and opportunities for users. This approach prevents a user from having to absorb a vast collection of instructions and details at once. Instead, the user can deliberately consume bite-size information from multiple sources that will more directly impact their tasks.

What training methods will be available?

Training Method Audience Anticipated Availability

Train-the-Trainer

Select subject matter experts (SMEs) who have been chosen by governance to serve as trainers across all areas of campus. September - October 2019

Virtual Instructor-Led / Webinars

Anyone seeking hands-on experience with the system from their desk.

September - December 2019

WalkMe (In-System Digital Adoption Platform)

Anyone using Kuali Research who needs real time, step-by-step guidance.

October - December 2019: Pre-go-live training

On-the-Job Coaching

Guidance from peers, supervisors and trainers. (UC San Diego uses a 70-20-10 model: 70% of training is expected to be on-the-job coaching, 20% from other people, and 10% from structured courses.)

January 2020 - Ongoing

Why are we not using other training methods?

Instructor-Led Classroom

Based on feedback from previous experiences, users and supervisors expressed the difficulty of knowledge retention while attending classroom trainings before go-live. Time impacts of traveling to a classroom for half-day or all-day trainings also create stress which then prevents successful knowledge retention.

Instead, we will implement hands-on learning opportunities through Learning Labs/Office Hours led by trained SMEs across all areas of campus. These opportunities will be distributed across all areas of campus to reduce the time commitments of traveling to a location. We will also provide access to Virtual Instructor-Led trainings that you can attend from your desk. In the Kuali Research system you will find WalkMe, our digital adoption platform which provides real-time step-by-step guides in the production environment so that you can complete work as your follow guidance in the system.

We are aware of the importance of hands-on experience and are eager to provide opportunities for users to interact with the system prior to go-live while also providing access to subject matter experts that can answer business questions related to the system.

Tutorial Videos or eLearnings

The production time for these two training methods is extremely long and rely on system stability for creation. Kuali Research is still undergoing testing and configuration based on User Acceptance Testing feedback which limits the amount of training materials that can be created before go-live.

Instead, WalkMe will provide step-by-step guidance in the system as the user completes their tasks. This will prevent users having to open multiple tabs with videos or guides outside of the system.
