About Enterprise Identity Management (EIM)

The EIM project was created to transform the management of student, faculty and staff access to university systems and resources through centrally-located and managed digital records created for each individual at the university.

Management of all student, employee and sponsored guest accounts would be improved, from more timely creation of accounts and access to university systems and services to the latest cloud-based technologies that will bolster security around an individual's digital identity and access.

EIM's systems:

  • Improve the student and employee experience by implementing policies, processes and technologies that simplify account creation and management of systems access
  • Increase efficiency and flexibility of operations by improving our ability to respond quickly to changing needs and technologies
  • Reduce university risk through improvements to information security and management of identity  operations/infrastructure.

EIM will lay the groundwork to help the university grow and change individual digital identity and system access management for years to come. Following are the principles and people who guided the project and contributed to the success of EIM.

Guiding Principles

Guiding principles are implementation ideals that move us closer to achieving our vision. We look to employ these principles in every decision, process and task as a means of attaining operational excellence for identity management.

  • Act in the interest of UC San Diego as a whole to improve and simplify the experience of interacting with UC San Diego's digital services.
  • Keeping an open mind, be willing to make big changes that will lead to a streamlined process for members of our community regardless of their role.
  • Develop and design sustainable identity management practices that follow industry best practices.
  • All process and design decisions must strive to:
    • Make joining the university community easy, consistent and persistent
    • Empower multi-institutional research and collaboration
    • Offer native support for people with multiple relationships to UC San Diego
    • Make the individual the focus of identity management
    • Simplify the experience of access to university resources for users while increasing overall  security of information
  • Work with campus leaders to enact change and support and advance the process of identity management.

Subject Matter Experts (SMEs)

Critical to the success of EIM, Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) bring knowledge from across UC San Diegoto the project to ensure EIM meets the business needs of the university now and in the future.

SMEs contribute to the EIM project by detailing foundational process/business practices, illuminating how things happen now to help in the design of the future state of those practices.

As the project progresses and is informed by this process work, SMEs will be called upon to inform design, conduct testing and help with process and system training.
